|| cw5 || Kites in the River: A Brer Rabbit Story

original Brer Rabbit story, composed by yours truly.  😉  my class jokingly told me i should put bluegrass with this story.  little did they know…i’m not one to disappoint.  here’s 52 seconds of the Orange Blossom Special!  i used three tracks mixed together…and yup.  enjoy! xD

Brer Fox, Brer Rabbit, Brer Turtle, Brer Possum, and all them folks was down at the river one day just a-passin the time.  The day was hot but that swimmin hole was just fine.  Brer Turtle was spinning lazily in the water, Brer Fox was flyin a kite, Brer Possum was sleeping by the water’s edge, and Brer Rabbit was bein a general hornet’s nest.  Hoppin around, he splashed water on Brer Possum, wakin him up.

“Watchit,” snapped Brer Possum.  “Yer interruptin my beauty sleep, and it’s not night yet.  Wen it ain’t night, it’s day, and when it’s day, they’s this wet stuff on the grass, and when they’s this wet stuff on the grass, it’s mornin, and you know I don’t do mornins–I’m a gersh-darn possum.  Take yer gallivantin’ elsewhere.”

Brer Rabbit tried to go to sleep, but he was too wound up.  He bounced around some more, and finally jumped atop poor old Brer Turtle.  Brer Rabbit bein much heavier n Brer Turtle made em both start sinkin, so Brer Turtle swam away and crawled onto the riverbank.  “Hey, watch yerself!” he called to Brer Rabbit.  I’s just tryin to cool off, not provide free rides.”

Brer Rabbit was real bored by now, so he went an tried to steal somethin of Brer Fox’s.  Grabbin the kite string, Brer Rabbit snatched Brer Fox’s money and stuffed it into his fur.  “Hey!  Watch it.  That’s my kite!” snapped Brer Fox.  Brer Rabbit pulled harder, and stoled that kite.  Now Brer Fox had a bee in ‘is britches, and he grabbed his kite back.  “That’s enough!” he sputtered.  We gonna get you back.

“Throw him in the water” laughed Brer Possum.

“With a rock tied to him so he sinks” added Brer Turtle.

“I’ma do them things, but I’ma do it better,” said Brer Fox.  “We gon tie him up and then throw ‘im in the river.”

“Just as long’s you don’t tie me with the kite string.,” said Brer Rabbit, shakin as much as he could muster.

“What a great idea,” said Brer Fox.  He tied up that rabbit as best he could, and threw ‘im in the river, kite and all.  “That’ll show ‘im!” exclaimed Brer Fox.

Brer Rabbit turned himself over in the water a few times, and unwound that string.  Throwin the kite into the wind, he held on with one paw, wavin ole Brer Fox’s money in his other.  “Looky here you old fox,” he shouted.  “Thanks for the money and the getaway car!”  Zippin down that river like a breeze, Brer Rabbit vanished down the river pulled by the kite.

Brer Fox felt real dumb after that, and flopped in the shade of a tree to contemplate ‘is life.
